Our history

A history of supporting families in Villa Candelaria, Cochabamba, and building educational opportunities together.

The first gatherings

Historical accounts describe support for families of relocated miners in Villa Candelaria. Conversations with mothers led to a mothers’ club, literacy activities, handicrafts and health support.

The need for food and childcare led to a community dining room organized around the Andean principle of Ayni, together with care and learning spaces for younger children.

Spaces for learning

The Wiñay Kusiy children’s center opened in 1991. Educational work that became Nuevo Conocer began in 1994. New facilities for the children’s center were built in 2007.

Initiatives such as Mikuniy and PATSIDA were added over time. The accounts acknowledge families, volunteers, churches and institutions in Bolivia and abroad.
